A Chailíní,

I hope you are all doing well. I have some news for you. Your teacher has an email address.  We need to set a few ground rules. You must use your parent or guardian’s email to contact your teacher. This is in accordance with our Child Safeguarding Procedures and Acceptable Use Policy.

This week we are asking you to submit a photo of one piece of work that you are really proud of. The teachers are really excited about seeing this work.

If you have a question about your work, you can send teacher an email. Remember, your teacher will probably have a lot of questions to answer so you must give your teacher some time to answer.

Remember the rules for writing an email too. Remember to put a greeting at the beginning and ask how they are keeping.  Use paragraphs for each question you might have. Don’t forget to sign off nicely too.

We look forward to hearing from you soon,

 Kind regards,

 Mrs Kelly

An Giorria agus an Toirtís

Bhí an ghrian ag taitneamh sa spéir. “Dia duit” arsa an giorria leis an toirtís. Bhí carbhat gorm agus cóta dearg air. Giorria bródúil ab ea é.

“Tá mé an-tapaidh ag rith”.

“Mise freisin” arsa an toirtís.

Thosaigh an giorria ag gáire.  Bhí rás acu. Bhí an toirtís mall. Bhí an giorria ag gáire. Chuaigh an giorria in a chodladh faoi chrann sa choill. Nuair a dhúisigh an giorria bhí an toirtís imithe. Ní raibh an giorria ag gáire. Rith an giorria go tapaidh. Chonaic sé an críoch agus bhí an toirtís ag an ribín. Bhuaigh an toirtís. Bhí an toirtís ag gáire anois!

Dear Parents and Girls,

Hoping you are all keeping well and that you enjoyed Active Week. We were unlucky with the weather but luckily you could do most of the activities indoors. We now know that we will not be back in school until September, so it really is important to continue to do your schoolwork.  The Summer holidays are just around the corner, so we need to make a big effort until then.

A really good time to get your schoolwork done is in the morning and then you have the rest of the day to play. If you look at this week’s work we have a surprise for you on Friday !

We now have our 3rd class email address. You can ask your parents to send us a piece of work that you are proud of this week.

We are really looking forward to hearing from you.

Stay Safe,

Regards,

Ms Finn and Ms Linehan

Dear girls, parents and guardians,

At last some lovely sunny days of summer have arrived and it is wonderful for us all to get out and enjoy the fine weather. Remember, however, that we all still need to heed the advice of the government and HSE and remember our social distancing and proper etiquette when coughing and sneezing, as well as good hand hygiene,  plenty of washing!

This week we have some exciting things in store. Firstly, all teachers have a new email address. So I’d like you to choose one piece of work this week and ask your parent/guardian to photograph it. They should email it to 4thclass@stpatricksgirls.net . You can choose anything you’d like. I’m really looking forward to having a look at the piece of work you will select.

Secondly, at 10.30am every day this week, try to log onto Maths Mayhem – multiplication tables. You will need adobe flash player on your device. I will try to do this myself too and we can all play the tables challenge against each other – just for fun!

Finally your project this week is about animals. You should select a different animal each day to write about. I have included some sample pieces of “report writing”, on which you can base your writing. Try to include lots of pictures and diagrams too. Plenty of colour to brighten up the pages.

Remember girls that doing schoolwork from home is our “new normality” for the moment and it is your responsibility to do the work each day. I’m really excited to see all of the work you’ve done when we return to school.

Keep safe,

Joan-Marie Healy

9.30am-10am English – Report Writing. Read these report writing pieces to familiarise yourself
with report writing.
Reports are written to describe or classify the way things are or seem to be.
They organise and record information.
Reports are organised by;
1) classification (eg Spiders belong to the arachnid family because they have an exoskeleton),
2) description (eg. Where spiders are found/live, what they look like, what they eat)
3) summarising comment. (eg. Spiders are fascinating creatures. People seem to have a “love
them or hate them” attitude towards spiders. Their long, scurrying legs and the potentially
dangerous bites of some spiders may scare people.)

Sample Report Writing – BATS!

Although bats have wings and can fly like birds, they are mammals. This means that, unlike birds, they feed their young with milk produced by the mother. The scientific name for bats is Chiroptera, which means ‘winged hand’. There are over 950 different types of bat in the world.

Bats can be found in all parts of the world, on all continents except Antarctica, although most types of bat live in warm countries. They roost in caves, hollow trees and buildings – anywhere where it is dark and warm. Sometimes they even live underneath bridges. Bats are nocturnal animals; they sleep during the day and forage for food during the night. When they sleep, they hang upside down, using their feet to grasp onto a twig or ledge.

The different types of bat in the world eat a wide variety of foods. Sometimes it is easy to tell what a bat eats just by its name, e.g. Fruit Bat and Fishing Bat. However, insects are the most common bat food. A single bat can catch 600 mosquitoes in just one hour.

Bats which hunt for live food do so at night. They cannot see their prey in the darkness, so they use a technique called echolocation. By making high-pitched clicking and squeaking sounds, they can judge how close things are by how quickly the sound bounces back to them. If there is no echo, then they know that there is nothing to eat nearby.

Many bats hibernate during the winter. When they wake in the spring, the females give birth to babies called pups. Normally a bat mother will have only one baby at a time, like a human mother, but sometimes they have twins. When they are born, the pups are hairless and tiny, but they have strong claws so that they can hang on to the ledge while their mothers are hunting. They grow quickly, and some types of bat can fly and hunt for themselves when they are just one month old.

Although they are very useful animals, due to the way they control insects and help to reseed plants, many bats are in danger of extinction. Of the fourteen species of bats which live in Britain today, two are endangeredand nine others are threatened.

Project Work Using what you’ve learned about report writing; write a report about a selection of animals this week. Choose a different one each day. You can select anything you’d like. You might like to take a theme – for example the “Big Five in Africa”, “Animals of Antarctica”, “Native Irish Animals” or you can choose a random selection.

Remember to follow these steps:

  • classification – opening paragraph should classify (explain) what type of animal it is
  • description – the next few paragraphs should describe where the animal is found, what they look like, what they eat, how they hunt etc.
  • summarising comment – the final paragraph should summarise the main idea or give a general comment about the animal

This template may help you to organise your work.

Use this checklist to check each piece of writing that you do to ensure that you have all the necessary information

Choose from these suggestions:

Geography: Geography Quest chapter 5 Let’s investigate where we live. What kinds of homes do people live in? You can do the activities orally if you wish.

Art: Using recycled materials can you make some of the homes you read about in your geography? You could even get everyone at home involved and build a street or even a town.  If this is too much you could draw/paint a town scene. If you are drawing don’t forget about perspective (far away things are smaller)

Science: Pick a bird or animal you have noticed in your locality, do some research and write a report.

Music. Learn the song Take me home, Country Roads by John Denver

SPHE: Being a good friend is important. Remember, our family members can be our friends too. I know we discussed friendship earlier in the year, but we have to be friends in different ways now.

Religion: You can access Grow in Love through the school website.

Listen to the story “An Indian Legend” and then open your book to page 82.

The month of May is dedicated to our Lady. You could say the Rosary as a family and sing some songs to Mary. Bring Flowers of the Rarest/Queen of the May is on pg 144 and you will remember As I kneel before you.

The Mysteries of the Rosary

May is the month of Mary Powerpoint.

Dear Parents and girls,
I hope you and your families are all safe and well. Did you enjoy Active Schools Week? I hope you did and I’m looking forward to hearing what
activities you tried and also if anyone came up with a new game or activity for us to try when we get back to school. There were lots of
different activities on last week’s work. I’m sure you may not have had a chance to try them all so take a look at some of them again this week
or re-try your favourite activity!
This week I’ve included answers from the Gaeilge and English work you have been doing over the last few weeks. Take some time to correct it
and see how you did. Also the Maths answer for Week 5 are there too. Have a look at some hints I gave you on the Magic Numbers and have
fun with them!
Again this week I have recorded the Gaeilge story. Have a listen, try and fill in the blanks and I’ll send you the answers next week!
I’m looking forward very much to seeing some of your work. As Ms. Kelly said, choose a piece of work you are most proud of this week and
send it to me.
Have a good week, remember your Hygiene rules and stay safe.
Ms. O’Sullivan 

A Chailíní,
Out of all the pupils in our school, I have known you the longest. We have had some great times together. I hope you are all making time to connect with one another and also to look out for one another. I know you are missing the end of primary school rite of passage, but believe me, Mrs Landers, Lizanne MacArtain and the Parents Group have all been in discussion with one another trying to come up with ideas. We don’t really know what is possible but we hope to do the best we can. Your teacher has an email address for you to use if you want to contact her with any ideas.  Just remember to use your parent or guardians email address. This is in line with our Child Safeguarding Procedures.

Hi Girls, Parents and Guardians,

I hope you enjoyed Active Home Week/ Wellbeing Week and that you tried out a few different activities to normal.

As you will have seen over the weekend the Taoiseach has announced that all schools are to remain closed until the new school year. I’m sure most of you are disappointed with this decision. We are all missing our friends and our routines but we are conscious that the decision was based on ensuring the safety of the whole community.

For you girls the news has been particularly sad as this means that the traditional rites of passage which are associated with the end of Sixth Class cannot now take place. Rest assured girls, once we are permitted to do so, you will get to celebrate as a class group as you deserve to.

Below is a listed schedule of work for next week: Week 7. Try and stick to a routine of getting most of the work completed in the morning.

I have included some extra activity ideas for those who would like to do a bit more work.  Remember don’t worry if you don’t get all of the work completed.

Parent s/Guardians, usually at this time of year we would have some lessons on Puberty and changes in girls’ and boys’ bodies.  I often use Busy Bodies, a DVD and booklet which are available to view online. If you google Busy Bodies it’s all there. There are different sections and I would recommend you look at it first before discussing the topics with your girls.

I hope you all have a good week.

Take care,

Ms.Landers
