Dear Parents/Guardians of 1st class students,

It was lovely to speak with you during the week. It was great to hear the amazing reports of work you are all doing to keep your daughter’s learning going throughout these difficult times. I heard about great art projects, baking, reading and family walks going on in households. The board games, jigsaws, construction and imaginative play happening all provide loads of learning for your daughter at this age too. RTE Education Hub was a big hit with many families and can help give the day some structure for everyone. Don’t worry if you haven’t finished the last week of work yet, keep going at your daughter’s pace.

Take care and I really hope I will see you all very soon!

Best wishes,

Sharon Gleeson.

Dear 1st class girls,

It was so nice to hear from you during the week. I know we are all missing school but I was so impressed to hear how hard you are all working at your school work! Keep it up! I can’t wait to see your projects, art and book reviews when we get back to school! This week your job is to play a board game with your family.

I am looking forward to seeing you when we get back to school!

Be kind,

Ms. Gleeson.

Daily News

(10 mins every day) Show your daughter the calendar and ask her to identify the day, date, month and season. Identify what day it was yesterday and what day it will be tomorrow. Ask your daughter to identify the time (o’clock or half past an hour only) and the weather and decide on one thing that she would like to do during the day.

Video calls to grandparents/family are a great opportunity for your daughter to practice her recalling skills. Before the call help your daughter to think of some things she has been doing that she wants to tell her family member about so she is prepared.

 Video Call with a Relative

This can be a nice idea if you have a family member who may have to self-isolate or who you may not be able to visit. It’s a way for children to use oral language and it might be a nice kind of game to play to keep boredom away.

Ideas include:

Play 20 questions – take turns in thinking of an object and the other person can only ask questions which have a yes or no answer.

A-Z – Pick a topic and take turns in naming something beginning with A then B then C and see if you can get to Z Without skipping any letters.

The Big Interview – child prepares 10 questions they’d like to know about the relative and then asks them

Reading

Continue to encourage your daughter to read daily. Read a book to your daughter. Snuggle up on the couch and spend ten minutes reading for no other reason than the joy of reading a book. Of course, there are loads of benefits to reading every day but what a nice time to drop everything for a short time. Please find online sources for books below, give one a try this week and see how you get on!

Well, here we are again – back doing some work after a very different Easter break. Hope you all has some Easter eggs and relaxed. I tried to watch the ‘Home-school Hub’ on RTE2 every morning at 11am and have enjoyed being a pupil for a change! I’ve caught up on a few Disney films (The Lion King and Aladdin) which ye might have seen in the cinema last year. As the weather has been nice, I’ve been doing a lot of weeding, so my knees are still sore, even though I’m not tying shoelaces!

I’ve set out some new work for your parents to give you. Remember to try your best but don’t be worried about it. I hope ye are remembering news to tell me (even better if ye can write it down). Be happy ladies, and don’t forget to match the socks when they’re washed!

It was lovely to talk to you recently and to learn how brave you all are being. We both miss you so much and I know you are missing school and playing in the yard and seeing your friends every day. It was wonderful to hear how some of you are cooking, drawing, gardening and one girl has a really special job of being a “Big Sister”. We were delighted to hear that you are all trying your best to do some schoolwork and that is fantastic.

It is really important to do exercise as well and ideally if you can go out and get fresh air each day you will feel great. By staying away from everybody you are all helping to keep Cork safe so well done you really are “Superstars”.

Dear Parents,

It was lovely to talk to you during the week.

How homes are changed in these past few weeks, with parents working from an office at home, children doing school work from home and a hive of extra curricular activities, all happening under the same roof. Hats off to everyone for embracing this essential new normality, while continuing to keep everything tipping over! I particularly salute the parents I spoke to who had finished long shifts in our hospitals, nursing and care homes. You are our heroes at the frontline. Thank you.

As I said to everyone on the phone, the work that has been set is a guide. If any pupil if finding part of the work difficult, they should leave it.  There are lots of other activities the girls can also engage in; reading a book, drawing, arts and crafts, chores and house work etc.

I have included a suggested timetable, which may be of benefit to some pupils. Obviously, it won’t work in every house – again it’s just a guide.

9.00-9.30              Exercise (JoeWicks on Youtube, Cosmic Yoga with Harry Potter)

9.30-10.45           Work on the Core Subjects (English, Maths and Irish)

10.45-11.00         Small Break-Have a snack and go out for a run

11.00-12.00         RTÉ School (on RTÉ 1 every day)

12.00-12.45         Project Work or listen to David Walliams read a book online

12.45-1.15           Lunch

1.15 onwards     Free Time

RTÉ Home School Hub

I really think that every pupil should watch the RTÉ Home School Hub every day on RTE 1 from 11am to 12noon. There are great lessons being taught for all levels. Some of the 1st/2nd class lessons are a little basic, but most of the rest of the content is very appropriate to the girls in 4th class. There are many engaging activities, and lots for the girls to follow up with at home afterwards.

Daily Diary

I was delighted to hear that so many girls are keeping a diary. I would encourage them all to keep a daily diary of what activities they did, what they enjoyed doing, what new things they learned, how they are feeling today, what things they’re grateful for etc.

Lunches

If any family would like to avail of the school lunches, it consists of a shopping bag per child. The bag consists of bread, butter, cheese, cereal bars and yoghurt – enough for a lunch for the week. It is hoped to include pasta and pasta sauces as time moves on but the contents are very much dependent on the supply chains right now. The link will be sent out again to parents.

Keep safe,

Joan-Marie Healy

[toggle_content title=”Letter to the Girls”]

Dear Girls,

It was really lovely to get to talk to you last week. I know there were a few people that I didn’t get the opportunity to talk to unfortunately, but I do hope that you are all still keeping safe, keeping happy and being kind to each other at home.

It’s brilliant to hear of all the lovely art and crafts, baking, cooking dinners, gardening, projects, real life drawings, baking birthday cakes, running, singing, dancing, writing letters and reading that you’re all doing. Some of you are also being really creative with how you are making contact with each other and talking to your friends. Well done.

Try to get some fresh air every day, exercise, do some of the work listed, watch the RTÉ School hub, work on your project, listen to David Walliams story or read a book.

Do continue to help out at home and be grateful and thankful for all your parents are doing for you.

Take care,

Ms. Healy

Easter 2020

Dear Parents and Girls,

it was lovely to speak with so many of you before Easter.  I hope you are all well and getting through this difficult time with as much fun and laughter as possible. My family are constantly sending funny messages and pictures on Whatsapp, which is great.

Now girls, the Easter Holidays are over and it’s time to do a bit of work again!

Parents, what follows are suggestions and every family must do what is right for them. Pick whatever time of day is suitable and whatever activities are suitable. If possible, it would be best to do some Maths, English and Irish every day and then pick from the other suggestions. Take time out regularly for some fun activities. Keep the boxes and paper from your Easter Eggs, they might be useful for art or projects!

Girls, remember to be kind, helpful and patient at home. Remember, we’re all in this together, and WASH YOUR HANDS.

I hope to see you all again soon.

Ms Browne.

You don’t have to do all the pages, pick and choose some of the questions from the pages but do try the Problem Solving activities on pg 126. (Like what we do in school.)

If any girl wants to you can do some extra revision work from Mathemagic, choose any topic that we have done in B@M and try it. There are also other Maths books on the website if you’d like to have a go at these! Just remember to write down the name of the book and the page number so we can find it when we get back to school!

  • You have just won a fantastic contest. What did you win and what did you do?
  • I walked up to the dark, mysterious cave. I carefully looked into the huge hole. It was cold and eerie. Suddenly…
  • Being a kid is special because…..
  • ….and as the night drew in, I was glad it was all over.
  • …and so we’ll never know what really happened.
  • Using your 5 senses/SALT – create and illustrate a character for a new book or movie.
  • Create a radio/TV show
  • Write a letter/postcard/email to someone you can’t see at the moment.

Hi Girls,

I hope you enjoyed your Easter break and that you didn’t eat too much chocolate !

I have enlisted a schedule of work for English , Irish and Maths and suggested what you should do in these subjects each day .

I am also giving you a little bit of other work . You can decide when is the best time for you to do this work in Week 4.

Remember to spend some time each day reading . Also don’t forget the menu of activities from Week 3 . It is optional to do these .

The School Hub continues on weekdays , 11 – 12 , on RTE  2.

Try to keep up with the “cúpla focail” Gaeilge by watching a bit of TG4 .

I’m sure most of you know Joe Wick has a PE session every morning , which can be accessed on Youtube.

Be kind to all at home and remember to keep up the good hygiene practises that you are doing : washing hands , good cough etiquette etc.

Regards ,

Jackie Landers
