Dear parents/guardians of 1st class students,
It was lovely to speak to you and the girls this week. I am blown away by the effort everyone is making to keep up with some school work at home. This week I am giving a menu of activities to choose from for active home week. I know you are all already doing lots of physical activities with your daughter so keep these up and add in others that suit your circumstances. Choose activities that are practical for your family to engage in and feel free to select your own activities instead of those presented below.
Best wishes,
Sharon Gleeson.

Dear 1st class girls,
It was lovely to speak to you this week! I hope you’re rested and ready for a very active week at home! You all seem to be having fun keeping very active already so this week should be a bit of fun. With your parents choose the activities that you want to do this week. Track your activity with a physical activity journal. Fill it in after you do each activity during the day. Make sure you get outside for a walk every day this week.
Keep moving,
Ms. Gleeson.

Dear girls,
Lovely to hear your beautiful voices last week! This week’s work is a little bit different. You will be exercising your mind and body and giving the books and pencils a rest! You can still tune in to the Home-school Hub at 11am on RTE2 every day. Below is a menu with PE lessons, art ideas, yoga, dance videos and outdoor fun. I’m sure you can think of other activities yourself. If the weather is nice, spend time exploring outside and if it’s cold or raining, play board games or cards. Keep busy and happy, ladies!
Lots of love,

Dear Parents,
It was lovely to speak to many of you last week and to hear that you are doing ok in this different normality. This is Week 6 of our closure according to the school calendar, and for a change we’ll focus on mind and body. These days we need to take care of ourselves and it’s good to let the girls see that exercise and outdoor activities play an important part in our general wellbeing. Hope you enjoy doing these activities too!
Thank you for your continued support and interest.

Try it another time using your foot.
Place the balloon between your knees and try jumping up and down the hall or outside 20 times without letting it fall.
With a partner place the balloon between your tummies and walk sideways along the hall or in the garden 20 times.
Take the balloon outside and play volleyball over the clothes line!

2) Throw and catch the beanbag in different ways, either solo or with a partner (e.g. clap once before catching, clap twice before catching, clap once and spin around before catching, throw under one leg, throw backwards etc.)
3) See how far you can throw the beanbag. Mark your distance and see if you can throw it further each time.
4) Make an obstacle course and try to complete it while balancing the beanbag on your head, or while throwing and catching the beanbag.
5) Throw the beanbag in the air and try to catch it using different parts of your body.
6) Make different targets for throwing the beanbag into (e.g. buckets, plastic bowls, clothes basket, paper plates). Assign a different number of points to each target. Write down how many points you score for each throw and calculate your total score. See if you can beat this score next time.
7) Make a line on the floor with masking tape (inside) or chalk (outside). Walk along the line like a tightrope walker, keeping the beanbag balanced on your head.
8) Place the beanbag between your knees and see how many jumps you can do without dropping it. Or have a ‘beanbag between the knees’ race.
9) Arrange empty plastic bottles or toilet/kitchen roll tubes in lines like bowling pins and throw beanbag from a distance to try to knock them over.
10) Place the beanbag on your foot without bending your upper body. See how high you can lift your leg in front and to the side while keeping the beanbag on your foot. See how far you can walk while keeping the beanbag on your foot. Then try with the other foot.

speared onto a branch.
- Some crumbs and stale cake will be mopped up by sparrows and larger birds
Remember the swallow? They are back! See page 11 of “What a Wonderful World to remind you”.
How do we know where they go?
People used to think that swallows hibernated during winter at the bottom of ponds.
Years ago, one man wanted to tell his garden birds apart from each other so
he caught them and put unique rings on their legs. Then in 1912 an amazing discovery
was made… he got a letter to say a swallow that he’d put a ring on was found all the way
down in South Africa!
This is how we found out that swallows migrate to Africa. Ringing is now commonly
used by scientists to track where birds and other animals go.

Dear girls, parents and guardians,
I hope this note find you all keeping well. It was great to get to chat with so many of you again this week. It was lovely to hear of all the activities you’re doing; lots of reading, tonnes of art and crafts, “sweet” kind posters, projects on France, Italy, Sioux People, Elvis Presley, lots of great biographies about famous women including Mary Robinson, James Barry, Derval O’Rourke, baking queen cakes, chocolate orange cakes, cookies, making fresh pasta, spring rolls, eating periwinkles, loads of exercise on the trampolines, zoom classes, walking, running, dancing to Just Dance.
It was so nice to hear how kind you’re all being, helping to feed the baby, taking younger brothers and sisters for a walk, cleaning and tidying bedrooms, preparing meals, tidying up afterwards and most importantly, appreciating things around you.
I was delighted to learn of how many of you are keeping in contact, facetime, whatsapp, snapchat, zoom etc. It is super that you can connect with each other – please remember to be safe when online and remember good online behaviour always. For parents, another great tool to connect with is the parent facebook group or the school twitter;
Join our Parents’ Group on Facebook. Put ‘st patrick’s gns parents group’ and ask to join the group.
Follow our school in twitter @stpatricksgns for up to date information on the school, competitions and activities to keep us all going during Covid-19
This coming week is ACTIVE SCHOOLS HOMES WEEK, with a focus on being active, eating healthily and being mindful, promoting positive mental attitude. I have included lots of activities and feel free to pick and choose what activities you want to do. You might have some of your own activities too or you might see an activity on another class page. Try out whatever you’d like. We are including a record sheet for you to record your time spent on activities every day. Keep a daily diary of what you do too. Many parents commented that the specific timetable worked better, so I’ve included this again this week. This is obviously just a guide! Activities are listed for Tuesday to Friday but do whatever activities you’d like on the other days. More than anything, we want you to enjoy the week, while being active and healthy, trying out as many activities as possible.
You have a challenge this week to design your dream PE lesson! Lessons can be uploaded to the school twitter account @stpatricksgns. I’m really looking forward to seeing what you create.
Keep active, keep safe and take care,
Joan-Marie Healy

May 2nd 2020
Dear parents and girls,
It was lovely to talk to so many of you last week. It was nice to hear your voices again and to hear about how you are getting on.
I know we’re all a bit fed up of having to stay at home, so we are changing things up for the first week of May. Normally at this time of year we have Active Schools Week but this year we are having Active Home Week, and everyone in the house can take part. You can even suggest to other family members, (aunties, uncles, grandparents) that they too can join in. It will be as much fun as you make it!
You will notice that the timetable below is blank. I would like you to decide what activities you are going to do each day. If you have a sister in the school maybe you could decide together what you are going to do. You will find suggestions for physical activities, art, music and relaxation. It would be good for everyone to keep a record of what they manage to achieve. You can make things as relaxing or as competitive as you wish. Try to be active for at least 60 minutes each day. Please try suggestions from each section.
Have fun!!!
Margaret Browne

SKIPPING CHALLENGE– How many times can you skip in 60 seconds?
If you do not have a skipping rope, you could use the rope/belt from your dressing gown or just use an imaginary skipping rope. This can be a challenge for all the family. If you find 60 seconds too long or too short, change it around. Do this every day and see how much you improve.
THROWING AND CATCHING (A) – How many times can you throw and catch the ball without dropping it? (If you don’t have a ball use rolled up clean socks.)
- Throw and catch with two hands
- Throw and catch with right hand
- Throw and catch with left hand
- Throw, clap and catch with two hands/right hand/left hand
- Throw and catch behind your back
THROWING AND CATCHING (B) How many times can you throw and catch against a wall? (mind the windows) Repeat the steps for Activity A
THROWING AND CATCHING (C) Ask someone to play with you. How many times can you throw the ball to each other without dropping it for 60 seconds. If you drop the ball you must start again. You can play with more people and even have teams. You have played this before at school.
CARD DECK WORKOUT
Use a deck of cards to take you through a 20-30 minute whole body workout. The number on the card indicates the number of reps. Pick a card to determine your exercise and reps and work your way through the deck. This can be played with any number of players. You could even play with family members on skype, facetime etc. Shuffle the deck before you start.
Hearts= Jumping Jacks. Diamonds= Push ups. Spades = Squats. Clubs= Sit ups.
Face Cards. Jack=11. Queen=12. King=13. Ace=14. Joker= 1 minute plank.
Have fun!
CAMOGIE- If you have a hurley and sliotar/small ball practice your skills.
- How often can you rise the ball in 60 seconds- remember to keep your hurley flat and you need to lunge forward and bring yourself close to the ground
- Can you hit the ball against a wall? (only if its ok to do so)
- Can you solo the ball?
- Can you hand pass?
DANCE
Put on your favourite song and dance around the house.
There are plenty of dance classes available on youtube- Oti Mabuse from Strictly, Fun2Bfit-Maeve Mullins etc. Don’t forget www.gonoodle.com. You probably know which ones are the best.
Make up your own dance routine to River Dance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0v_pu6miJ8

Active Schools Week
Hi girls! Welcome to Active Schools Week!! It was great to talk to you all and your parents last week. I know a lot of you are missing school and miss seeing your friends but I was glad to hear that you’re all doing ok and keeping safe. Also I know it’s getting a little harder to keep up the motivation to do schoolwork so this week we have decided to give you guys a little break from the schoolbooks and try something different – ACTIVE SCHOOLS WEEK!!!
This week we’re going to focus on ourselves and ways to keep our minds and bodies healthy and active. Each day I want you to pick and choose some activities from the different categories. Once you have done them you can fill in the daily timetable attached. Again, don’t worry if you can’t print the timetable or any of the activity sheets, you can copy them down and decorate them on a piece of paper. Some of the booklets attached have lots of fun ideas but you don’t have to do them all and some of them may not interest you so have a look through them and choose the ones you would like. Some of the activities you can do on your own and some of them you can do with your brothers and sisters or with your parents…take a look at the Family Olympics!! Try and include everyone in the fun!
Some girls might like to make up their own games or design their own activities…brilliant! Don’t forget to write them down, draw them or take a picture so that we can try the games or activities together as a class when we get back to school.
Remember this week is all about keeping active, staying healthy, looking after ourselves and our minds so if there is any other sport, game, dance, activity that interests you give that a go at home too!
Also don’t forget to check out Ms. Kelly’s weekly ‘WHOLE SCHOOL CHALLENGE’ on the website.
Enjoy the week girls, have fun, be active and stay safe.
Ms. O’Sullivan

Hi girls,
It was lovely to talk to you last week and see how you are all doing.
This week we are going to put the books aside and focus on our physical and mental wellbeing.
The idea is to motivate us to keep physically and mentally active at home by trying some new (and old) activities, taking on challenges and hopefully having some fun.
Below is a menu of activities which you can do. Some of the activities can be done on your own while others involve you asking some family members to join in. You can do other appropriate activities that are not suggested below.
Aim to do 3 – 4 activities a day. Please keep a record of what you do every day. Fill out the timetable that I have included (or make your own one) or keep a diary of the week recording events completed.
Go n-éirí leat,
Ms. Landers
