Week 8

[toggle_content title=”A Thank You Letter from Mrs Kelly”]

17th May 2020

Dear parents, guardians and girls,

There have been many changes to our way of life in the last few weeks and the pressure and strain of the experience has and is affecting everybody.

At St. Patrick’s Girls National School, we have endeavoured, to the best of our ability, to provide our usual level of ‘Dóchas agus Grá’ using Distance Learning through our Covid 19 Home Work, School Meals,  supportive phone calls, school challenges and now the emails.

We would like to thank you, our parents and guardians for the incredible support, loyalty and patience that you have demonstrated during this very challenging time. Your expressions of gratitude and your support are most welcome by all of us.

We would particularly like to thank our girls who continue to work with us during this very tough experience.

Extraordinary times call for extraordinary people and the staff at St. Patrick’s Girls National School have responded magnificently by making great efforts to stay healthy and safe while working their socks off for our school community.

At St. Patrick’s Girls National School, we  are constantly reviewing our policies and practice especially during this school closure keeping your daughter’s safety and well being in mind. To that end, we are constantly reviewing our policies such as our Child Safeguarding Risk Assessment, our Acceptable Use Policy and our Critical Incident Policy. We are also examining our Safety Statement looking to the future and our return to school.

Once again, we are committed to providing a safe environment for our staff and pupils. Not all of our efforts have been received well all of the time, but we will continue to make the necessary decisions, popular or not, to keep our girls safe physically and mentally.

This situation is far from ideal and therefore we ask you for your support, understanding and assistance.

“If we winter this one out, we can summer anywhere” (Seamus Heaney)

Thank you for your support,

Eileen Kelly

Grow in Love book – continue practising the ‘Liturgy of the Word’ responses on inside of the back cover of the book, and also the psalm ‘The Lord, he is my shepherd’ – instructions to find this below:

Go to the website  https://www.growinlove.ie/en/

Login in with the email trial@growinlove.ie  and the password growinlove.

When in the website click on the image of the textbook – Second Class /P4.

Go to page 25 of your book to learn the psalm with your family. (On the website, click on Theme 4 and then scroll down and click on the icon with the musical note called ‘The Lord, He is my Shepherd’ – see image below to help).

As this month of May is the month of Mary, turn to page 54 of your Grow in Love book which has a picture of rosary beads. You might also have beads at home. When saying the rosary we say one Our Father, ten Hail Marys and one Glory be to the Father (all prayers on page 64). We then repeat all of that four more times. It would be nice to make a little May altar in your room or living room – a statue or picture of Mary and flowers.

Maths

Work It Out  week 28

Back to money. 100c is €1.00. To help us in our work this week, we go need to go over hundreds, tens and units.

Remember we used the arrow cards to build numbers. So 853 os made up of 800 and 50 and 3.

124 is 100 and 20 and 4. Every 100c makes a euro. So if we have 124c, the hundred goes into the euro department.

And then the 24 cent are put in the cent department. The euro sign is more powerful than the cent sign and so that is the one we use.
€  1. 24

Remember;-100c is €1.00.

So we can write money in two different ways.

110c=€1.10

157c=€1.57      – the 100 cent of 157 is recorded as 1 euro to the left of the dot or “decimal point”. The left over 57c is written on the right  side of the decimal point…which is the cent department…but don’t write cent. Only use one sign or the other ever.  € sign is used when using the decimal point.

Spellbound. Week 29. P.60. Finish the list. Wordbuilding! See how many words you can make that end in –ark. Try as many of Exercise 4 on p.61 as you can.

Florence is in Italy. Florence Nightingale was born there. Remember we read about her on p.50 of What a Wonderful World? Look back over it. Now read more.

At this time we celebrate the front-line workers, especially nurses. Florence was a famous nurse known as the “lady of the Lamp”.

She was born in Florence on May 12th in 1820 into a wealthy English family and showed great talent in mathematics from an early age.

She was never content to be what society  expected of a lady of those times – hosting tea parties and wearing fancy clothes. She wanted to become a nurse That is what she did! She trained in Germany.

Florence went to the Crimean War in Turkey in 1854 to care for injured soldiers. There she found that far more soldiers were dying of disease than wounds. She tried to improve hygiene.

Using data (number information) she had gathered, she had lots of facts about wounds,  infections and the importance of handwashing and clean bandages. She developed visual displays (maths picture) similar to the pie chart that is common today. A pie chart is another form of bar chart. (See p.29 of Cracking Maths for an example of a bar chart). Here is what a pie chart looks like. This one is about how people get to school. People like the way you can read the information quickly from a pie chart.

With her data and pie charts she got politicians to listen to her advice and work for change. This had a huge impact on the design and work practices of hospitals resulting in a significant drop in death rates. On her return to England she educated nurses.

Florence died in London in 1910.

To summarise, Florence Nightingale is considered the founder of modern nursing and the 12th of May (last week), was the 200th anniversary of her birth – her birthday. She was great at maths and used it to fight the spread of illness.  May 12th is also designated as International Women in Mathematics day.

Write these sentences in your copy and fill in the blanks.

  1. Florence was born __________ years ago.
  2. She came from a ___________ family.
  3. From an early age she was good at ____________.
  4. She dreamed of becoming a _______________.
  5. She was sent to nurse soldiers during the Crimean __________.
  6. The soldiers called her ‘The _________ of the ____________’.
  7. She realised more soldiers were dying from _____________ than from their wounds.
  8. Florence worked to improve h____________ in hospitals.

More shopping bills. A little challenge – these needs you to think bigger than a euro but the idea is the same.

Spellbound. Week 29. P.60

Let’s have fun with words and be poets! Look at p. 45 of you Starlight for a framework on writing a list poem. Verse 1 of the poem “Not-So Fast Food” on p.42 is an example. It could be a list for Art, sport, a sleepover…You choose.

Irish and Maths

Ag siopadóireacht. Make up a shop. Get toys, or books or clothes – or whatever you like. Make price tags for each item and attach. Keep the prices low… each under €1.

Make a sign – Siopa (shop). Give yourself a nametag – eg Siopadóir Máire (Shopkeeper Mary). A doll or teddy can be a customer if no one is free at home.

Useful phrases. Listen to my audio.

Dia duit…Dia’s Muire duit(hello)

Conas atá tú ?…How are you?

Tá mé ar mhuin na muice. (I’m fantastic….on the pig’s back is the literal translation).

Cad atá uait? What would you like?

Tá …… uaim.  I would like…

Tá ……uaidh.  He would like…

Tá …..uaithi.  She would like..

Más é do thoil é…please

Go raibh maith agat…thankyou

Dear girls, parents and guardians,

I hope you’re all continuing to keep well and safe.

Firstly, thank you for all the emails. It’s absolutely brilliant to see the great work that’s being done in all your homes. Great credit goes to all of you who are sitting down and focusing on your work and keeping busy.

I was delighted to see so many of your projects. You’ve been working really hard. This week’s project is to design a brochure/information booklet/page about a town in Munster. You can choose any town you want. Perhaps you may have visited a place (before the lockdown!) or you might be interested in certain aspects of a place. Try to select a town outside of Cork if possible. I have included lots of links and ideas to help you so take time to have a look through them.

There was some great tables challenges this week on Maths Mayhem. I appreciate that some of you can’t access it as it requires adobe flash player. If you can, log on everyday at 10.30am this week and we’ll do division tables.

Take care and keep safe,

Joan-Marie Healy

Select 3 or 4 towns in each of the 6 counties of Munster and learn their names. Be able to locate them on the map.

Project for Week 8

Your project for this week is to select a town in any county in Munster. Research this town and write a report about the town. Your report should take the form of a BROCHURE/INFORMATION BOOKLET advertising the town.

Remember to use very positive words and phrases as you are trying to encourage and persuade people to visit the town. You can include some or all of the following points;

  • Location of the town (include a map if possible) – where in the county? How to get there? Is there a train station?
  • Geography of the area, local rivers, lakes, mountains, – is there a river/bridge in the town?
  • History of the town – is it a Norman settlement, is there a castle nearby? Can you find old photographs of the town?
  • Tourist sites – castles, parks, caves, old buildings, museums, exhibitions
  • Things to do (for adults and children) – water activities, playgrounds, walks and trails, cycle tracks
  • Entertainment – theatres, fairy trails, festivals, street markets or performances
  • Where to stay – hotels, hostels, camp sites, B&Bs
  • Places to eat – is there a wide choice of restaurants presenting a vast and varied selection of food
  • Any other interesting facts about the town?

After you’ve done a draft and edited it, the final publication should have a clear layout, be easy to read and be eye-catching.

Dear parents and girls,
It seems almost like forever since I saw you all. I hope you are all well and staying safe and healthy. Thank God the weather is good so we can all go out
and get some fresh air!
You are probably asking yourselves why are the children still working when we won’t be back at school until September? Well, if you do not use your brain
on school- work now, it will be much more difficult to get back into the swing of schoolwork when the time comes.
All the experts say that we need routine in our lives. Now that our normal routines are not available to us, we must make out daily routines or plans for
ourselves. If the suggested timetable below does not suit your family change to a timetable that works for you.
I have once again recorded the Irish reading. This story is quite long so I have recorded only pg 100. You will get pg 101 next week.
Corrections for Irish, English and Maths are also provided for you.
This week you can learn how to write a letter and maybe send one to a family member or a friend. You also have the option of doing a project on the
History of Cork. Remember, everything on the timetable etc are suggestions. You must make decisions about what you are going to do. If you find the
History more interesting than letter writing that’s fine. Ms O’Sullivan has made out a quiz for the History which you will find after the daily timetable.
You will notice that the timetable for Wednesday is different. We are suggesting Wellness Wednesday. This could change to Timeout Tuesday or Fun
Friday. Whatever works for you is fine with us. Pick any activity from the list or anything you wish to do. The Active School Week activities are still on the
website. Have fun!
Watch out for Mrs Kelly’s challenges. They are usually at the top of the list of each new week’s work.
I would love to see some of your work so remember that you can email me at 5thclass@stpatricksgirls.net using your parents email address.
Stay safe, 2m apart outside and keep washing your hands.

This week girls we are going to learn all about Cork and its’ History. Design a travel brochure for someone visiting Cork, giving the history, places to see and visit, famous people, food, sport, music, things to do, etc. Use your own knowledge of Cork and look at some of the websites attached to help.  Google ‘history of Cork for kids’ and you will find lots of interesting websites all about Cork. Don’t forget to include pictures, drawings, the crest of Cork, maybe a map of Cork or a map showing where in Ireland Cork is…all of those things.

Remember girls a travel brochure is colourful, full of interesting and helpful information and fun to read! Have fun with it girls! To help you get your thinking caps on, Ms O’Sullivan has created a little quiz ‘All About Cork.’

History of Cork

Read the History of Cork and answer the questions.

The History of Cork City

Early historical records show that there was a monastery in Cork from the early part of the seventh century.  Stories and legends tell us that this monastery was founded by St. Fin Barre on or near the site of the current St. Finbarr’s Cathedral on the southern bank of the great river Lee.

St.Fin Barre is reputed to have travelled the path of the river from its source at Gougane Barra into what is now Cork City.

Over the centuries any remains of the early monastic site have disappeared but life stories of various saints mention the monastery and that it was a place of pilgrimage.

The monastery came under attack from the Norsemen in 820.  However, in the three and a half centuries which follow there were only three recorded attacks on the monastery.  It seems that the Vikings did not plunder the monastery but instead established a settlement or town nearby.  Evidence shows that it is likely that the monastery and the Viking settlement lived peacefully side by side and that any problems the monastery had with raiders were just as likely to have come from their Irish neighbours as from the Vikings.  Where the Firkin Crane now stands is reputed to have been a possible site for a Fort or Dun belonging to the McCarthy Clan.

There is very little archaeological evidence to prove the existence of the Viking town in Cork compared with the wealth of information we have from other Irish cities and this may be due to the fact that archaeological excavations have concentrated on the later medieval town and not on the areas of the South Island where old documents would indicate that the settlement was based.

There is a lot more known about Medieval Cork than there is about Viking times in the City.  When the Normans came to Cork around 1171 they started to build stone walls around the town and this was very useful to protect those inside the walls when those outside attacked.  The remains of part of this wall can be seen in Bishop Lucey Park and under the ramp near the entrance to the North Main Street Car Park.

The city gets its name Cork, from the marshy ground which can be found under the city. In fact, the city as we know it today is built on a series of marshy islands which have been built up over the centuries.  North and South Main Streets which may once have been waterways, are on two islands one to the north and the other to the south.  These islands were joined to the river- bank by the original timber North and South Gate Bridges. This part of the city was probably where the Vikings settled and after them the early Normans.  This can also be seen in the numerous small alley ways still visible on North Main Street.  If you look down from time to time, you will see the alleyways outlined in different stone on the modern footpaths and some of the alley ways are named on plaques on the walls, or on the ground.

As we move through the centuries and beyond the Middle Ages, we find that the merchants and wealthy people began to move outside the Medieval Town to areas now known as Montenotte and Blackrock.  What we now know as St. Patrick Street was once a canal along which ships sailed up as far as Kings Old Castle and Queens Old Castle where a great drawbridge was lifted to allow ships to enter the city.  The map of city streets shows street names such Ship Street and Drawbridge Street showing some historical links.  Some areas of the city still show signs of the waterways of Cork where you can see steps leading up to front doors and high archways where once boats were moored.

  5. When did the Normans come to Cork?
  6. How did Cork get its name?
  7. Where can the remains of the stone wall be seen?
  8. Can you pick out any historical names from a modern day street map of Cork?
  9. Design a crest for your street/estate/road.
