Dear parents/guardians of 1st class students,

I hope you are all keeping well. The fine weather is really keeping me going!

This week I have given a day-by-day break down of activities. Please use this only as a guide and do what you can in your circumstances. If you are still catching up on work keep going at your daughter’s pace and don’t worry about falling behind. As I said, work below is just a general guide, homes are busy and it won’t always be possible to do school activities.

Select some activities from the project work, there are lots of suggestions and no need to do all of them. Select a few that your daughter would most like to do. Thank you for your continued support.

Best wishes,

Ms Gleeson.

Long ago people used candles for light and later they used oil lamps (remember Florence Nightingale). We are going to read and listen about the man who invented the lightbulb – his name is Thomas Edison.

Science Fun!

A shadow is made when light cannot get through an object. That is why we see shadows of our bodies on the ground on a sunny day – if the sun is behind us, it cannot go through our body, and a shadow in the shape of our body is formed on the ground in front of us.

Find a torch (or lamp) or you can use the flashlight on a phone to make shadows on the wall, using your hands. Wait till it’s dark outside.

This is my attempt – I definitely don’t have a talent for this, but I tried my best!

These are some videos I found on Youtube which are much better at showing you how to do it!

Dear girls, parents and guardians,

Happiest of greetings to all of you. I hope you’re continuing to keep well and manage the challenges being faced every day. Here we are at the last week of May, with only a few weeks left in our school year. As we are slowly easing restrictions, we are all learning how to change the way we would usually do things.  I realised this week how much I do miss seeing your work; in your copies, on whiteboards, in projects.  So I was absolutely delighted to receive the emails, showcasing your hard work.  I’m very proud of what you are achieving yourselves and I hope you are proud of your efforts too. I look forward to seeing more of your work the coming week. Please email it to 4thclass@stpatricksgirls.net .

Letter to parents and girls

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all staying safe and remembering to wash your hands and stay 2m apart when outside.

Stay strong and focused on making the most of each day.  When you go for your walk smile at people and be cheerful.  Your smile might be the only smile someone receives that day.

It can be hard to stay motivated to do your school- work. If you are having a bad day try a little exercise, listen to music you enjoy or read a favourite book. When you have cheered yourself up a little come back and try some work.

There are some wonderful things happening with nature right now.  Take some time to watch the birds in your garden.  If you have your camera/phone beside you, you might be able to take some wonderful photographs.  Look at Mrs Kelly’s challenge for Week 9.

We will be looking at 3D shapes this week in maths.  You can also use them in your project on Flying machines so check the recycling bin!  There are some youtube and cjfallon links which I hope you will be able to access.

There are two voice recordings for you to listen to, Seo Leat pages 101 and 102, and a recording of Starman from the National Children’s Choir performance at City Hall.  Do you remember how fantastic that night was?

You can still send me some of your work or projects at 5thclass@stpatricksgirls.net

Have a good week,

Margaret Browne

Letter for the girls

Dear parents and girls,

I hope you’re all keeping well and have had a good weekend. This week again watch out for WELLNESS WEDNESDAY! Try some different activities this week. If you come up with any fun ideas, please let me know and I can share your ideas with the class on next week’s list.

This week girls you’ll notice that there are lots of hands on Maths and Science activities. Use these activities as work to be completed in the afternoon during Project Work time and take time to experiment and play with them.

Below is an experiment I had timetabled for English/Science time on Friday but I’m going to add it in here at the start as you may like to work on it throughout the week.

Balloon Powered Cars: This week we have been learning all about flight and the history of flight. Did you try and make the paper rocket and the paper aeroplane in Monday’s Maths class? Next week, we will be looking at other forms of transport. Today I am going to give you instructions on how to make a balloon powered car! This experiment explores the scientific reason that ‘For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.’ So for everything you do, it causes something else to happen. Watch this video to learn more about forces.

https://youtu.be/Kdqqglsplhs

Now try making this balloon powered car using a water bottle. Follow the steps outlined, watch the video for extra help!

https://youtu.be/HJJZoekmvCE

Try it this time making the car out of cardboard.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzY9RH_JnL0

Is there a difference between the car made from the water bottle and the car made from cardboard? Which is more durable? Which is stronger? Does one car go faster or further than the other? Try the car on different surfaces: carpet vs tiles vs countertop? Does the surface make a difference to the movement of the car?

Make notes of your findings and the different experiments with the 2 cars. I would love to see what you discover!

Also watch out for Mrs Kelly’s challenges.  They are usually at the top of the list of each new week’s work.

I would love to see some of your work so remember that you can email me at 5thclass@stpatricksgirls.net  using your parents email address.

Have a good week, be good and remember to stay safe by practicing all our good Hygiene rules.
